Baghnath Temple is an old Temple of Lord Shiva, situated in the Bageshwar city at the junction of Sarayu and Gomti rivers. Baghnath temple has an Elevation of 1004 m above from the sea level.
According to mythology, Saint Markandeya worshipped Lord Shiva here and Lord Shiva blessed saint Markandeya by visiting here in the form of a Tiger. In the mid of 1450 A.D. Kumaon region was ruled by Chand dynasty and Laxmi Chand. They were Saint at that time. The Bagnath temple was built by the Laxmi Chand and the various statues in the temple are date back from 7th century AD to 16th century AD. The holyness of the temple mention in the Skanda Purana(स्कन्द पुराण).


Weather hereabouts is same as Bageshwar. Semi humid type climate and the conditions are extreme during the different seasons. Summers are warm and the temperatures rise significantly only during the peak summer months about 25℃-36℃. Winters are bitterly cold as the temperatures are below freezing point for many months about 2℃-3℃. The monsoon season is similar to that in many other parts of the state and good rainfall is to be expected.


Bageshwar city gets its name from this Temple. Hindu Pilgrims visit throughout the year to worship here.Baghnathis the most famous Temple in Bageshwar District. It is crowded with venerator on the occasion of Shivratri.
One of the famous fair of uttarayani is held every year in the Baghnathtemple in the month of January on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. On this day the religious ritual of the fair consists in bathing before daybreak at the confluence. And then offering of water to Lord Shiva inside the Temple. And those who are more religiously devoted, continue this for three days. which is known as "Trimaghi".

In order to experience the beauty of the Bagnath, to experience local lifestyle and to feel sainthood of Temples one thing to consider is weather conditions. Throughout the year the weather of Baghnath(Bageshwar) is different the temperature changes from -2℃ in winter to 40℃ in summers but the crowded months are March to June(15℃ to 28℃) in summers and November to January (2℃ to 15℃)in winters.

Baghnath Temple is 26 KM far from Bageshwar and 17 Km from Kausani near HP petrol pump (Baghnath fuels). Bageshwar and Kausani are well connected by motorable roads.You can hire cabs to reach Baghnath temple or use local conveyance.
