The literal meaning of the Ranikhet Word is “Queen’s Meadow OR Queen’s Farm”. The place gets its name from a local legend. According to the local legend, Raja Sudhardev choose the area for the residence of his beloved queen Rani Padmini and gave it the name of Ranikhet.
This hill station was discovered by the Britishers in 1869. They established the Kumaon Regiment headquarters and used this station as retreat from the heat of the summer.
Ranikhet is a cantonment town in Almora District at an altitude of 1869 meters. Being the home of KRC and Naga Regiment it is managed and maintained by the Indian Army.
It is the one of the popular destinations of the Kumaon region. It is the highly suitable destination for the nature lovers, solo travelers, family, couple, photographer, etc .Basically this place is for anybody who just want to get rid of their monotonous life. It’s a very peaceful and calm place with extremely soothing weather. It could be a perfect place for weekend getaway from nearby cities like Delhi.

PLACES TO VISIT IN RANIKHET

Haidakhan Temple

The Haidakhan Temple is situated at Chiliyanaula (Ranikhet) at a distance of 4 Km from the main market of Ranikhet.
This temple was made by Shri Haidakhan baba (Baba Haidakhan is said to be the incarnation of lord Shiva) and dedicated to lord Shiva.
From the Temple you can have a beautiful panoramic view of the Himalayas.

Binsar Mahadev

Binsar Mahadev temple has an artistic structure and it is dedicated to lord Shiva. This temple is surrounded by the beautiful pine and cedar trees which makes it a pleasant place for the devotees and tourists.
This place has a calm environment and a sense of spiritual peace to it.

Rani Jheel

Rani Jheel is an another jewel to the beauty of town Ranikhet. Rani Jheel is situated nearby Nar Singh Stadium, beneath the Veer Naari Awas. It’s beautiful and peaceful environment gives the visitors a chance to relax and enjoy the ride of Boats.

Golf Course

The Golf Course of Ranikhet is one of the highest golf courses of Asia. It is Situated at a distance of 5 kilometres (3 mi) from the main town of Ranikhet. Ranikhet Golf Course is a 9-hole course. It is the one of the prime attractions of Ranikhet. The green meadow and pine trees of the golf course at such high altitude is awe-inspiring. The golf club provides membership plans for outsiders as well.

Mankameshwar Temple

Mankameshwar Temple is situated near Nar Singh Ground at Ranikhet. It is built by Kumaon Regimental Centre in 1978.
The main deities of Mankameshwar temple are Maa Kalika, Radha-Krishna, and lord shiva.
You can also visit the Shawl factory and Gurudwara, which are located at the opposite side of the Mankameshwar Temple.

Jhula Devi Temple

Jhula Devi temple is located near Chaubatia at a distance of 7 Kms from the main town of Ranikhet.
It is said that the dense forest near the temple was once full of wild animals, like leopards and tigers. These wild animals used to attack local villagers and their animals. The villagers prayed to Maa Durga for their protection, and one day Goddess Durga came in a shepherd's dream and advised him to excavate her idol. This temple was constructed at the spot where the shepherd found Goddess Durga's idol. Since then pilgrims come to make a wish to Goddess Jhula Devi. And when their wish is fulfilled they come again to thank Jhula Devi Maa by offering a bell to the temple. The popularity of the temple can be realized by number of bells hanging over the temple walls. The temple priests have to timely shift the old bells to a different place to make room for the new bells that are tied everyday. In addition to bells, dried coconut and prasad is offered to the Goddess.

Rama Mandir

Rama or Ram mandir is situated near the Jhula Devi Temple, dedicated to lord Rama. It is situated at the hilltop and people can reach there by a small flight of stairs.

KRC Museum

This museum is maintained by the Kumaon and Naga Regiment of the Indian Army. This museum has a very wide collection of the stories of different wars.
It tells the story of valor of our soldiers, who sacrifices their life for our country. It has the display of various weapons captured during the war.

Ashiyana Park

Ashiyana Park is specially designed for the children on Forest theme by the cantt board of Ranikhet. It is situated in the mid of the town.

Chaubatia Garden

Chaubatia Garden is also a famous place in Ranikhet and located at a distance of 10 Kms from the town of Ranikhet. This place is famous for its picturesque views of himalayas and the plantation of different species of himalayan fruits like peaches, apple, almonds, apricots and chestnuts. This place is specially famous for the apple orchards.

HOW TO REACH

By Air –

The nearest Airport is Pantnagar to Ranikhet. The Road distance from Pantnagar to Ranikhet is around 109 Km. Ranikhet is well connected by roads, that’s why taxis can be easily hired from Pantnagar Airport.

By Train –

The nearest Railway Station is Kathgodam to Ranikhet. The Road distance from Kathgodam to Ranikhet is around 75 Km. It will take about an hour to reach the Ranikhet from Kathgodam. Kathgodam is connected with many cities through the train network. So, you can easily reach Kathgodam and then Ranikhet by motorable road.

By Road –

Ranikhet can be reached easily via roads. Taxis and buses are easily available from all the major cities to Ranikhet. You can hire Taxis too by contacting private travel agencies or contact The Pioneer of The North.
